Meet Pink Sari

Tell us about Pink Sari. What is your mission?
Pink Sari is driven by a passionate team of volunteers, dedicated to reducing the impact of cancer within South Asian and Indian subcontinental communities in Australia. Pink Sari’s mission is to lessen the impact of cancer in South Asian communities through education, information, advocacy, and support. Our broader vision is to improve the health and wellbeing of South Asian families.
Describe your programs.
Pink Sari raises awareness about cancer and the importance of early detection. Through community-requested information sessions, Pink Sari promotes screening for breast, cervical, and bowel cancers.
Pink Sari also runs workshops and support sessions for patients and carers, offering guidance on coping with diagnosis, treatment, and life after cancer. We connect participants to support services and practical strategies for maintaining physical and mental wellbeing.
How do you involve volunteers in your volunteer program?
Pink Sari has a well-established volunteer program that includes recruitment, training, and ongoing engagement. A dedicated committee member manages volunteer coordination.
Our volunteers are our informal ambassadors. They raise awareness and our profile in the community, spread information about our upcoming events and encourage people to participate.
Through their altruistic contributions, volunteers inspire others to get involved. Many of our volunteers have been impacted by cancer themselves or as a carer. This drives them to continue volunteering despite competing demands in their lives.
What resources and services have helped to support your volunteer involvement?
Our current volunteers underwent formal training conducted by The Centre for Volunteering in March 2024. They felt better equipped to handle volunteering activities after training.
Why did your organisation become a member of The Centre? What benefit has it brought your organisation?
Pink Sari has been a proud member of The Centre for Volunteering since 2023, gaining access to the Volunteer Referral Service, valuable promotional and networking opportunities, and discounted rates on workshops and accredited training programs.
What have you learnt about the value of volunteering?
Pink Sari has shown the remarkable impact that passion and commitment can achieve. Our milestones and community impact highlight the value of volunteering, while effective volunteer management ensures a respectful, fulfilling, and collaborative environment that drives our shared goals.
What would you say to someone thinking of volunteering?
Volunteering is a meaningful way to give back to the community, build friendships, develop new skills, and gain valuable experience. We encourage everyone to find a cause that resonates with them and contribute and make a real difference. Don’t hesitate—go for it!
