Chau Au: Sydney City finalist for the 2018 NSW Young Volunteer of the Year.

By the time Chau Au was 24 years-of-age, he had set up five Code Clubs – a place for local children aged 9 -13 to come together in schools or libraries to learn computer coding skills.

The children are taught amazing new skills like how to create their own computer games, animations and websites. Along the way they also learn to express and build new ideas via digital technologies.

Chau has set up clubs in places like Randwick, Parramatta and Fairfield where he grew up. He still leads the clubs but also recruits other volunteers to help him grow more clubs for local students.

Chau is particularly proud of the Parramatta Code Club – where 80 percent of students are girls, paving the way for greater participation in the traditionally male dominated IT and digital profession.
