Tammy Callaghan didn’t know much about coaching, but it didn’t prevent her from stepping forward to learn on the job as the coach of the Under 5s junior boys team at the Sydney East Bulldogs Australian Rules Football Club. The mother of three boys still coaches, even though none of her boys play in her team. There are 49 male coaches at the club and Tammy is the only female coach.
Tammy’s work encouraging greater participation for young girls in Australian Rules football is where she has made an even greater impression. Two years ago she began writing and sending emails to local schools and other groups; she ran introductory clinics; and she convinced senior female players to lead training sessions – all to get more young girls involved in the sport.
There are now 132 players of all ages in the club’s girls only teams thanks to Tammy’s persistence and single minded determination to open up the sport.
