Why did you decide to volunteer?
They say that payment is all part of the joy. Well, I have been paid in some wonderful ways over the years that I have been a volunteer. There is nothing greater than a warm smile or the wag of a tail from a dog to make you feel all warm and fuzzy! These are some of the pleasures of being a volunteer but there is much more.
At present, I am volunteering through Hammond Care, visiting a sweet little lady. She lives alone and has a dear little dog who greets me with such warmth that I feel part of the family. We spend a short time together each week and enjoy a cuppa and long chat covering all manner of subjects and really enjoy each other’s company. At the end of the time I know that we have both enjoyed the visit and in a small way, it has alleviated her loneliness. I feel proud that I can help her in this way.
How did you choose this particular organisation?
I first came across Hammond Care in Nowra as an audience member, listening to what and where to find helpful care for the elderly in the community. I sat on the edge of my seat as I heard about all the wonderful options and assistance that Hammond Carers could offer to those in need. As a local organisation, I was pleased to support Hammond Care.
As a member of the ‘over 60s club’ I knew that there would be time in the future that I might need help in my home and finding out how to access this help and finding that there were so many people to assist in the process immediately put my fears to rest. The staff are wonderful, so friendly and helpful, and it’s great to know that you’re a part of this team.
What do you enjoy most about volunteering?
Meeting and assisting others less fortunate has been a very important part of my life, especially during the past twenty years, which is how long I have been a volunteer for different organisations. Feeling the stress and worry of those less fortunate, due to illness, loneliness or misfortune and being able to help in some way towards getting a better outcome for them is very rewarding.
I have so many wonderful memories of some really beautiful people I have been able to assist through some of life’s challenges and the giving of time, for no other reason than wanting to help, is so rewarding. I have made friendships that last a lifetime!
