Tell us about Blue Mountains Food Services. What is your mission?
Blue Mountains Food Services is a local not-for-profit organisation, committed to supporting older people and people living with disability to live independently in their own homes. Its mission is to nourish, connect, and strengthen the community through practical services delivered with care.
What are your programs/initiatives, and why do you run them?
Blue Mountains Food Services provides Meals on Wheels, community restaurants, and social support programs such as Cook + Connect and shopping assistance. These services reduce isolation, improve wellbeing and cooking skills, and ensure people stay connected to their community.
How do you involve volunteers in your programs?
Volunteers are essential to all programs — from delivering meals, to helping at community restaurants, to providing friendly companionship. They’re the welcoming faces that make the services personal and meaningful.
How do your volunteers make a difference in the community?
Volunteers not only deliver food, but also friendship and care. A quick chat at the door or shared laughter at a community lunch can make a huge difference to someone’s day.
Do you have any stories from your volunteers?
One volunteer shared how much they value being a “bright spot” in someone’s week — knowing that their simple act of delivering a meal and checking in can be the highlight for an older community member living alone.
What resources and services have helped to support your volunteer involvement?
The Centre’s training and guidance have been invaluable in building strong volunteering programs. Their recognition program also provides a special way to celebrate and thank the Blue Mountains Food Services volunteers for their contribution.
Why did your organisation become a member of The Centre? What benefit has it brought your organisation?
Blue Mountains Food Services joined to connect with a broader network of volunteer organisations and to strengthen our practices. Membership helps Blue Mountains Food Services stay current with best practice, and provides opportunities to learn, share, and celebrate alongside others.
What have you learnt about the value of volunteering and/or volunteer management?
We’ve learnt that volunteering is about connection as much as service. When volunteers feel valued and supported, their joy in giving shines through, creating stronger, kinder communities.
What would you say to someone thinking of volunteering?
Give it a try! You’ll make new friends, have fun, feel part of something bigger, and know that even small acts of giving your time can make a big difference to someone’s life.
