Inclusive leadership for Volunteer Managers

Diversity is reality but inclusion is a choice. Diversity is all around us but we decide as leaders whether or not to make full use of diversity around us. Inclusive leaders listen, observe and learn from people.

In this session, Diversity Australia will take you through experiential learning techniques that challenge traditional mindsets and engage leaders, managers and coordinators through honest discussion. The approach ensures that the session is tailored allowing participants to challenge and adapt their behaviours in a safe environment.

Core aspects of leadership, such as setting direction and influencing others, are timeless, but we see a new capability that is vital to the way leadership is executed. We call this inclusive leadership, and there are six traits that characterize an inclusive mind-set and inclusive behaviour. This module introduces the Six Signature Traits of Inclusive Leadership and engages participants through Self Assessment, Story Telling, Peer Coaching and Action Planning.

The session is designed to:

  • Build understanding of unconscious bias and our reactions to difference in the workplace, and the impact these have on our decision-making.
  • Develop new or modified leadership behaviours and work practices to maximise the benefits of diversity and create a more inclusive work environment.
  • Help leaders create higher levels of psychological safety so people can speak up, provide different views, and bring their full selves to work.
  • Identify individual actions and commitments to improving each participant’s inclusive leadership capability.
  • Create momentum towards a more inclusive workplace and culture.
  • Create high-performance through leveraging the diversity of thinking, perspective and backgrounds of team members.
  • Demonstrate the commercial value of creating an inclusive workplace that supports diversity.
