Cherie Gray from North East Community House

We spoke to Cherie about her experience and her top tips as volunteer leader

What was your biggest lesson learned?
Every volunteer is different, and taking the time to understand their strengths, motivations, and circumstances makes such a difference. Working with volunteers from all walks of life and at different stages of life has also taught me so many valuable life lessons, and that’s honestly been one of the most meaningful and rewarding parts of supporting our volunteer team.

Do you have any tips for keeping volunteers motivated?
Keeping in regular contact and showing genuine appreciation goes a long way. Even the small things can make volunteers feel valued and part of the team.

Any tips for recruiting volunteers?
Building connections in the community and sharing real stories about the impact volunteers make has been one of the best ways to attract people.

What was your most valuable aspect of the course?
The most valuable part of the course for me was gaining practical skills and confidence in managing and supporting volunteers, which I can use straight away in my role.

What was the most challenging part and how did you overcome it?
Balancing study with work and family life was definitely the hardest part. I got through it by staying organised, taking it one step at a time, and reminding myself why I started.
