Tell us about AIM Association. What is your mission?
AIM Association (Australian International Multicultural Association) is a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to celebrating diversity, strengthening community connections, and creating opportunities for people from all cultural backgrounds to participate, contribute, and thrive. AIM’s mission is to foster a more inclusive and connected Australia by supporting multicultural engagement, recognising community achievements, promoting talent, and providing platforms that empower individuals and organisations to make a positive impact.
What are your programs/initiatives and why do you run them?
AIM delivers a range of initiatives designed to bring communities together and recognise excellence across multicultural Australia. Its key programs include:
AIM runs these initiatives because it believes multicultural communities deserve greater visibility, recognition, and opportunities to connect with one another while contributing to Australia’s social and economic success.
How do you involve volunteers in your programs?
Volunteers are at the heart of everything AIM does. They are involved in a wide range of activities including event coordination, administration, marketing, photography, videography, social media management, community outreach, interviewing, judging support, and guest engagement. The organisation aims to provide meaningful volunteer experiences that allow individuals to develop new skills, gain confidence, build professional networks, and contribute to causes they care about. Many volunteers also have opportunities to take on leadership roles and help shape future initiatives.
How do your volunteers make a difference in the community?
AIM volunteers help extend reach and increase impact. They assist in delivering events and programs that celebrate multiculturalism, support local businesses, recognise community leaders, and provide opportunities for emerging talent. Beyond their practical contributions, AIM volunteers help create welcoming environments where people from different backgrounds can connect, collaborate, and feel valued. Their efforts strengthen community cohesion and encourage greater participation across multicultural Australia.
Do you have any stories from your volunteers?
Many volunteers join AIM seeking experience or connections and go on to achieve remarkable outcomes. Many volunteers develop confidence in public speaking, secure employment opportunities, launch their own community initiatives, and take on leadership positions within other organisations. One volunteer initially joined to assist at community events and later became a key coordinator responsible for managing teams and overseeing major activities. Another volunteer used the media and communications skills gained through AIM’s programs to pursue professional opportunities in the industry. These stories demonstrate how volunteering benefits both the community and the volunteers themselves.
What resources and services have helped to support your volunteer involvement?
Resources from The Centre for Volunteering have helped AIM strengthen its volunteer management practices and better support the volunteer workforce. Access to guidance, best-practice resources, training opportunities, policy information, and sector updates has been valuable in helping AIM build a positive and sustainable volunteer program. Being connected to a broader network of volunteer-involving organisations has also enabled AIM to learn from others and continually improve its processes.
Why did your organisation become a member of The Centre? What benefit has it brought your organisation?
AIM became a member because it recognised that volunteers play a vital role in achieving its mission and wanted to ensure it provided the best possible experience for those who contribute their time and skills. Membership connected AIM with valuable resources, professional guidance, and a network of like-minded organisations committed to supporting volunteers. It helped AIM strengthen its governance, improve its volunteer management practices, and enhance the overall experience for the volunteer team.
What have you learnt about the value of volunteering and/or volunteer management?
One of the most important lessons learned is that volunteers are not simply an extra resource—they are often the driving force behind community impact. When volunteers feel supported, appreciated, and empowered, they contribute far beyond the tasks they are assigned. Effective volunteer management requires clear communication, meaningful opportunities, ongoing support, and recognition of each volunteer’s unique skills and contributions. Investing in volunteers ultimately strengthens both organisations and communities.
What would you say to someone thinking of volunteering?
Volunteering is one of the most rewarding ways to make a difference while also investing in yourself. It provides opportunities to learn new skills, meet people from diverse backgrounds, gain valuable experience, build confidence, and contribute to causes that matter. Whether you have a few hours a month or more time to give, your contribution can have a lasting impact. AIM encourages anyone considering volunteering to take the first step—you may be surprised by how much you gain while helping others.
