Animal Liberation

Animal Liberation is an animal rights charity founded in 1976 by Christine Townend, based on the philosophies of Professor Peter Singer, as set out in his worldwide best-selling book Animal Liberation. Animal Liberation has branches in all states of Australia and many thousands of supporters.

Animal Liberation believes all animals (yes humans are animals too) have a right to live how they would normally choose without other species intervention. Animal Liberation wants to challenge society on its views of all non-human animals. They do this is through educational campaigns, public events and using the media campaigns.

We appear at music festivals and hold monthly public meetings where information about campaigns and actions are discussed and activists can become more involved through these meeting. We are involved in research and advertising to get the message across to consumers regarding treatment of animals who are commonly eaten.

The animal rights movement is a growing one and we intend to maintain our fight for all the non-human animals on this planet until every last one is liberated from suppression.

Volunteer opportunities for young people
Animal Liberation focuses primarily on education and as such, it raises awareness by hosting information stalls, handing out leaflets, staging friendly public demonstrations, and holds workshops for specific campaigns. Animal Liberation is usually on the lookout for in-office assistants to help with letter writing and coordination. There are a host of other roles open to young people. Animal Liberation is also developing a youth programme that will have teens running projects that they have developed themselves. It's all about wanting to make a difference. For example, if someone wants to run a campaign about the horrors of fur, Animal Liberation will help that person get the message out there. Animal rights campaigns require positive, energetic and creative people in its endeavour to raise public awareness of its causes. Volunteers range from high school students, to those involved in professions, such as law.
Benefits of involving young people as volunteer in Animal Liberation
Youth volunteers can learn many practical skills that can help them in their daily lives and their future careers. Animal Liberation runs communication workshops where people learn positive communication skills, public speaking and other public relations skills. If helping with a particular campaign, a young person will learn invaluable organisation skills. The major benefit is that young people get can the support they need to develop and implement their ideas into campaigns. They can be heard! If a young person is a vegetarian or vegan for ethical issues, or they want to help ALL animals, they can feel isolated from others, even family. Animal Liberations offers a positive environment where they are supported in their personal cause.
Young people making a difference to Animal Liberation
Animal Liberation believes it is the power of the individual that makes the difference. The decisions individuals make do have an impact, whether it is on others, the animals or the environment. The biggest impact a young person can have is informing those around them of the issues and spreading the word, as well as leading by example. Many youth volunteers are first year university students who have formed animal rights groups at their university and are working on putting a stop to animal experimentation. One youth volunteer is currently planning a fundraising event involving live bands.

SCIP speaker for Animal Liberation

Nicole Brown
Humane Educator

Nicole resolved to fight for animal rights not long after a school excursion to an abattoir. Her reaction to the sight of cows being slaughtered was singular. She became a vegetarian, and then a vegan while voraciously researching animal cruelty issues.

Nicole's interest led her to volunteer for Animal Liberation three years ago. Her induction to proactive animal rights campaigning involved rescuing ducks in Victoria. Nicole has combined her teaching qualification and her enduring passion for animal rights and liberation in her current role as a Humane Educator.
