The main function of the Sydney Heritage Fleet is the restoration, operation and maintenance of a fleet of historically significant vessels. The Fleet relies on volunteers to carry out the work involved. If you are interested in any aspects of these activities you too can become a volunteer and become involved in preserving Australia's maritime heritage.
Volunteering at Sydney Heritage Fleet can be a wonderful opportunity for young people to learn about maritime history. You can learn new skills while sailing a Tall Ship or while working at the Shipyard on one of the heritage vessels.
Sydney Heritage Fleet Youth programs are going from strength to strength, some of their students have successfully pursued a career in the maritime industry. Some of the older students have gained Apprenticeships through our work experience program. Sydney Heritage Fleet is a great place to work and to become a volunteer. There are a whole range of tasks you can help out with and you don't necessarily have to be technically minded as you learn a lot along the way.
Anyone over 16 years of age can be part of Sydney Heritage Fleet. Some of training can consist of working as a Deckhand or General Assistant at the Shipyard.
Sydney heritage Fleet would not operate without the enthusiasm of the young volunteers who commit themselves. The fleet is non profit and they would not be able to preserve these great ships as part of our exciting Australian history without young people. Sydney Heritage Fleet really value having young volunteers as part of the maritime community, and they find that these young people always enjoy themselves and get many personal benefits from their work.
Kathy just loves her job; her love of boats led her to work for the organisation in helping to run the Fleet's Youth and Volunteer programs.
