Job Descriptions

When recruiting volunteers for your organisation, you must provide them with as much information as possible. This means developing good descriptions for all volunteer positions.

A volunteer job description is an important document. It facilitates the expectations of the volunteer and the organisation, and it serves as protection for both parties as it provides a summary of the agreed position

Volunteer job descriptions need the same level of detail as paid job descriptions and should include enough detail for the volunteer to understand what the job entails, for instance:

  • The objectives of the position.
  • A description of the tasks involved, leaving some room for innovation and creativity.
  • The hours/days required.
  • The lines of accountability of the position.
  • An evaluation of the position.

Volunteer management expert Mary V. Merrill (1945-2006), has written a great article on developing job descriptions. Read it on World Volunteer Web.
