The Modern Australian Communities report examines the critical contribution of seniors in community volunteering.
9 out of 10 seniors believe that local communities are the fabric of our society. This dedication is reflected in the commitment by seniors to volunteer in their local community: with 1 in 2 seniors volunteering. Volunteering seniors, on average, donate 8 hours per week or 412 hours per year. This equates to a total of 1.4 billion volunteer hours per year. This translates to a value of $46.5 billion per year for the Australian economy.
With 1 in 3 seniors saying they are less likely to volunteer in the next ten years, the concern for the social and economic well-being of our communities is immediate. Seniors themselves have identified this, with 2 in 3 concerned about the future of volunteering.
This report not only identifies the vital contribution made by seniors to the health and well-being of communities through their volunteering but highlights the need for this contribution to be recognised and supported. Seniors need to be supported to continue to volunteer and give back as the benefits of their participation are multi-faceted – benefitting them personally, their communities, the state, and the nation.
