Graham West, 2008 and 2009 Award Patron
Graham West entered NSW Parliament in 2001. In 2007 following the State Election he became Minister for Gaming and Racing and Minister for Sport and Recreation.
In a little more than a year, he finalised the most comprehensive reforms to the Liquor Laws in 25 years, and tackled the alarming rates of problem gambling among young people by rolling out a series of education kits in schools and implementing an online campaign.
He put a stop to poker machines going into problem areas, and he ensured NSW remained a One Casino State.
As Minister for Sport, Graham West announced funding for more than 300 regional and community sport and recreational facilities around NSW.
Graham West has been the Minister for Juvenile Justice since September 2008. He has also previously been the Minister for Youth, Minister for Volunteering and Minister Assisting the Premier on Veterans’ Affairs.
As Minister for Juvenile Justice, he is responsible for more than 3,000 young people in the community each year and an average of 400 young people in NSW Juvenile Justice Centres each day.
Mr West welcomes the opportunity to address the issues facing young people in NSW and to assist juvenile offenders and their families.
As Member for Campbelltown, Mr West represents one of the youngest areas in the State and he knows how important it is to engage with young people and make sure their voices are heard.
