Sporting chance for volunteers abroad
By Vanessa McQuarrie

The Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games is offering volunteers with experience in sport development a unique opportunity to work overseas.

Coaches, technicians, athletes and administrators can apply for a placement which will take them to a Commonwealth country for between one and six months.

Thirty countries across Africa, the Americas, Asia, the Caribbean, Europe and Oceania are interested in utilising the skills of 'sport development volunteers'. Many of these countries are among the poorest in the world.

The volunteers will provide leadership to a local organisation and help it to deliver sporting services – whether at a community or elite level.

For example, Barbados would like help implementing a 'talent identification' program based on the Australian Institute of Sport model and Niue, a small island in the Pacific, wants to integrate a junior sport development program into its primary school curriculum.

To find out how to register your interest or to apply for a specific volunteer position go to the Office of Commonwealth Games Coordination website.
