NVW 2012You're invited: National Volunteer Week 2012 Launch
      
You are invited to join The Centre for Volunteering for the Sydney launch of National Volunteer Week 2012, and to officially open nominations for the 2012 NSW Volunteer of the Year Awards.

Guest speakers will include the Hon. Victor Dominello MP, (Minister for Citizenship and Communities), Jon Dee (Ambassador of 2012 NSW Volunteer of the Year Awards) and Loki Ball (Winner of 2011 NSW Youth Volunteer of the Year). We hope to see you at the launch for National Volunteer Week.

National Volunteering Video Competition for Young PeopleNational Volunteering Video Competition for Young People
    
To increase volunteering participation amongst young people, the Australian Government has launched an online video competition which asks young Australians, either individually or as a group, to create a video to promote ways for young people to volunteer within their communitiess.
    
The theme for the competition is “Your Passion, Our Nation.  Volunteer Now!
    
Through this competition, young people can showcase some of the benefits of volunteering:

  • Shaping and supporting your community;
  • Gaining and enhancing practical skills and experience;
  • Helping others and giving something back to your community;
  • Gaining satisfaction from taking practical action to build a better world;
  • Having fun with others outside traditional responsibilities like school, uni, TAFE and work.

Volunteer for The Centre for Volunteering during National Volunteer Week
   
Can you spare 2–4 hours on Tuesday, 15 May 2012? Help promote National Volunteer Week and Volunteering while gaining event and public relations experience.

Volunteers are needed for a public relations event during National Volunteer Week. Volunteers are to approach members of the public to promote volunteering, and the recognition of volunteering through "Thank a volunteer today" or by nominating a volunteer they know for the 2012 NSW Volunteer of the Year Award.

Shifts: 9.30am–12:00 noon and 11.30am–2:00pm

Benefits: Drink, snack and t–shirt provided.

Orientation: 30 minutes before each shift (at 9.30am and 11.30am) at Martin Place.

2012 Ignite Volunteering Conference
The Centre for Volunteering invites you to join fellow volunteer managers and coordinators at the 2012 Ignite Volunteering Conference to be held in Sydney CBD on Friday, 27 July 2012. The day will comprise of a mixture of plenary sessions, interactive workshops, panels and case studies, all focusing on "Innovation and Partnerships." The aim is that you will take with you the inspiration to build innovative ideas into your programs and organisations, and help you to look at opportunities for partnerships with other community organisations, sponsors and client groups. 2012 IAVE World Volunteer Conference announced
IAVE's 22nd World Volunteer Conference will be held in London, England, from 10–12 December 2012, at the Church House Conference Centre in the heart of London. "This conference will be an opportunity for us to build on the momentum of IYV+10, carry through our strategic priorities and bring together leaders of volunteering from throughout the world," said Dr. Kang-Hyun Lee, World President of IAVE. No more free training? No more free training?

What do you think of something you get for free? How much value do you place on it? I have been pondering this over the last week. I spend about 700 hours a year presenting seminars and workshops (14 hours a week on average). This means I see and meet a lot of people and can make a lot of observations about what I have learnt from these trainings. From time to time, a client will organise me to present training to their community, network or city for free. To pay for the training, they will use funds from somewhere else... Here are some observations I have made over the last eight years. Read more

Back in 1996, I was a very fledgling volunteer manager living in Sydney, Australia and the group that gave me much practical help and support were what were then called Volunteer Centre of NSW (now The Centre for Volunteering). It was at this time, I met Margaret Bell, who had led that organisation for 13 years. I learnt a huge  amount from Margaret and her team who encouraged and supported me. Her achievements and contribution to volunteering were fairly amazing at a state, national and international level as well as at an individual level. Read more

Volunteering Australia
Margaret Bell AM has been appointed by the Volunteering Australia Board as the first patron of Volunteering Australia. Margaret has a long history of championing volunteering and has made an extraordinary contribution nationally and internationally. Margaret is Australia's most significant volunteer champion. Margarets history in volunteering has seen her make her mark in Australia as the founding President of Volunteering Australia and its first CEO. Margaret has then taken that volunteer passion to the world as President of the International Association for Volunteer Effort (IAVE). Read more

VAST, The Junction Neighbourhood Centre
What makes your city, your council, your neighbourhood or even your street corner, special to you? Is it the service, clients or volunteers? VAST is looking for digital photos which capture the essence of the HACC Volunteer Services and the people living in the community. VAST is looking for images which demonstrate the daily life of services and volunteer programs in all its flavour and variety. Chinese Volunteers Recruitment Campaign launchedChinese Volunteers Recruitment Campaign launched

The Chinese Australian Services Society (CASS) has launched the "Chinese Volunteers Recruitment Campaign", which is part of the An untapped Resource: Older CALD Volunteers – Understanding barriers and motivations to volunteering in NSW, research funded by Ageing, Disability and Home Care (ADHC) and conducted through a collaboration of the Dementia Collaborative Research Centre of the University of NSW (UNSW), Council on the Ageing (COTA), NSW and the NSW Multicultural Health Communication Service with strong support from The Centre for Volunteering.

Have your say on the development of a Consultation Code
Federal Government's National Compact
The Not-for-Profit Sector Reform Council is leading the co-creation of a Consultation Code that will underpin the National Compact. The code will give practical guidance on how government should engage with the sector. Not-for-profit organisations are invited to participate in an online survey regarding their experience and suggestions for future consultations. The survey closes Thursday, 10 May 2012.

Survey: Understanding volunteer retention issues
Help TAFE NSW students studying an Advance Diploma of Marketing to survey 100 people currently volunteering for a registered Australian charity centres. The survey focusses on how to retain and prolong volunteers to help the group gain a greater understanding of current volunteer retention issues. The survey is anonymous and closes Friday, 11 May 2012. Complete the survey online

New ABS reports: Volunteering and sports

Did you miss hearing CEO, Lynne Dalton on Radio National?
On Thursday, 5 April 2012, ABC's Radio National hosted a discussion panel on Giving Back. "Easter is one of those times when many of us give thanks for what we have. And Australians have a lot to be thankful for. With our personal wealth growing, Australia now boasts the ninth largest population of high net worth individuals. But how seriously do we take our responsibility to give back for our good fortune?" The Centre's CEO, Lynne Dalton joined presenter Waleed Aly and guests Norman Morris, Industry Communications Director, Roy Morgan Research and Dr Deborah Seifert, CEO, Philanthropy Australia for the panel. The Centre's access for people with physical disabilities to improve
The Premier, Barry O’Farrell MP, recently emailed The Centre with great news – its application to the 2011 NSW Government's Community Building Partnership (CBP) program was successful. As a result, The Centre is able to install an internal chair lift between the two levels and automatic entry and exit doors. Watch this space for updates.

Marriage leads to new name...
The Centre's Marketing and Award Manager, Kristin Romanis, has recently married and has taken her husband David's surname, making her Kristin Sinclair. Her email address has also changed – ksinclair@volunteering.com.au – please update your address book. Congratulations to David and Kristin.

Professor Dan Finn recently presented at a workshop as part of ANU's research series, Visioning Australia's Future. Dan Finn is Professor of Social Inclusion at the University of Portsmouth and Associate Research Director at Britain's Centre for Economic and Social Inclusion.
