The NSW Volunteer of the Year Award program recognises and celebrates the enormous contribution of the 2.4 million volunteers in NSW to community life. NSW Minister for Volunteering, the Hon. Victor Dominello, is Patron of the Award.
Nominate your friends, family, colleagues, volunteers, staff, NFP…the list goes on, for the 2011 NSW Volunteer of the Year Award. Anyone can nominate, it's easy!

Ignite Volunteering Conference – Registrations are now open!
Calling all Volunteer Managers. You are invited to attend the Ignite Volunteering Conference for 2011 to be held in Sydney CBD on Wednesday, 14 September, 2011. This year's conference theme is "Inspire and Engage", with speakers aiming to inspire and engage you as volunteer managers and coordinators, which will help you in turn to inspire others and engage with your volunteers, colleagues and client groups.

Date and venue change: National Conference on Volunteering
Due to issues following the floods in Brisbane, the date and venue for Volunteering Australia's upcoming National Conference on Volunteer have change to the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre on the dates Monday 28th to Wednesday 30th November 2011 (the first social function, Casual Drinks and Registration will be held on Sunday 27th November). Too many volunteers, not enough jobs!

Are you in need of volunteer assistance in your organisation? The Volunteer Referral Service (VRS) has many volunteers eager to assist you. Administrative roles are in short supply as these are very popular, however, the VRS is keen to receive any volunteer vacancies you may have. Many of our volunteers have significant skills and qualifications in administration, clerical, accounting and other disciplines. Submit your roles via the online Job Description Form or if you require assistance, please phone the VRS 10am–3.30pm on 9261 3600.

Fido continues to help members recruit skilled volunteers

Fido is a service for members of The Centre which assists them to find volunteers for a wide range of positions. The Fido Help Desk column in the Saturday and Monday editions of the Sydney Morning Herald is available for members to advertise volunteer vacancies. As this is a free service, priority is given to positions requiring qualifications, experience or certain skills. Read more

Ignite MasterClass, Promote Team Effectiveness: Wednesday, 10 August

Review: 11 delegates took part in the workshop, led by Martin Cowling, and many aspects of forming and managing teams in the workplace were discussed. The workshop included games, small group work, and discussions on strategies and resources available for maximising team effectiveness in the community sector. Delegate comments included "great, relevant and worthwhile", "Martin is very engaging and created a very relaxed and informal context for learning..." and "A good variety of issues well-presented and properly and thoroughly covered".

UWS Student Volunteer Briefing Session Report

On Tuesday 19 July 2011 The Centre for Volunteering helped organise a Student Volunteer Briefing Session at the University of Western Sydney (UWS). It is hosted for the benefit of UWS students who are either members of the Aspire Future Leaders program, enrolled in the Advanced Business Leadership degree or recipients of a university-funded academic scholarship. School of Volunteer Management Graduation
At the School's graduation on Wednesday, 3 August, nine out of the 26 graduates attended – including Lynne Dalton, CEO, and Valerie Hoogstad, Board member – and gained their testamur as presented by Joy Woodhouse, Chair. Some had completed the Certificate I in Active Volunteering, Certificate IV in Training and Assessment and Diplomas of Business and Management. Mark Tippett, Manager, said "honouring our students in a formal informal way such as this allows them to take time out of their busy days to say to each other 'well done!' The School applauds the work done by each of these students and welcomes the next batch of graduates – which may include you!"

The Office of Communities is leading the development of the Strategy. The Office is working with Volunteer Referral and Resource Centres, the Centre for Volunteering and other non-government organisations to ensure that a wide range of groups and individuals have an opportunity to participate in the consultation process. Mark Lyons Community Management Scholarship
The Mark Lyons Community Management Scholarship has been established by The Centre for Volunteering and the University of Technology Sydney to support a student enrolled in the Community Management Program in the Faculty of Business, or undertaking a faculty research degree where their research project focuses on the not-for-profit sector.
