Calling for nominations for the 2010 NSW Volunteer of the Year Award
The 2010 NSW Volunteer of the Year Award is calling for nominations for individual volunteers, volunteer teams and corporate volunteers. The NSW Volunteer of the Year Award program is an opportunity to further recognise the valuable efforts of these volunteers and is this year proudly supported by Westpac. Anyone can nominate and it's easy.
There are three major categories of award:
- 2010 NSW Volunteer of the Year Award
With special Awards for Youth and Senior Volunteers of the Year (selected by judges)
- 2010 NSW Volunteer Team of the Year Award
- 2010 NSW Employee (Corporate) Volunteer of the Year Award
Nominations are now open for 2010 and we are urging all organisations supported by volunteers to nominate your most dedicated volunteer or volunteer team.
Nominate online or download a nomination form to complete offline. Nominations close on Thursday, 30 September 2010.

2010 National Disability Awards: Social Inclusion Award
Department of Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs
The 2010 National Disability Awards are open and calling for nominations in the Social Inclusion Award category. School and community groups are the lifeblood of many Australian suburbs and towns, playing a pivotal role in encouraging participation and inclusion of people from all walks of life.

| 2010 National Multicultural Marketing Awards
Community Relations Commission of NSW
The National Multicultural Marketing Awards have officially opened for 2010. The Awards are open to anyone in business in Australia with entries closing on 31 August 2010. Winners of the Awards will be officially announced at a Gala Presentation on 1 November 2010. A total of seven Awards will be given out on the evening of 1 November 2010, including Awards in the area of community, commercial sectors, advertising and government. Find out more

Australia Post and Our Community's 2010 Photo Bank Awards are now open
The Community Photo Bank is open to any community group that needs to illustrate some aspect of the life of the community. Our Community wants everyone to contribute to documenting Australian community life in all its infinite variety, and to encourage you to participate they're throwing in $5000 in prizes.
Entries for the Photo Bank Award close 15 October 2010.

The Centre's Members-Only website has been re launched to provide members with the latest Resources, Research, Ignite Conference Papers, an Online and Membership Info and Services Access Point. Each Member will receive their login and password upon renewing for 2010/11.

Governance of NSW Not-for-profit Organisations Report
In 2008 The Centre for Volunteering evaluated the issue of optimal board size. This evaluation and subsequent discussions revealed a general need for a broader baseline understanding of governance in Not-for-Profit organisations, board size being just one aspect of this. This led to the decision to conduct an expanded research project including the other aspects of board operation.

The Centre for Volunteering has launched its new Youth Volunteering website: a fabulous online resource for young people wanting to volunteers, schools wanting to set up Student Volunteer Programs and organisations wanting to engage young people as volunteers.

| 2010 Ignite Volunteering Conference Report
On Friday, 21 May over 100 volunteer managers and coordinators from 75 organisations converged on Pitt Street, Sydney for this year’s Ignite Volunteering Conference. The Hon. Peter Primrose, Minister for Volunteering opening the conference, emphasising the vital role that volunteer managers play in our community. Throughout the day, delegates attended plenary sessions, networking sessions, workshops and panels on a range of topics. Farewell Maia Giordano, Youth Volunteer Program Manager

Australian League of Immigration Volunteers' (ALIV) FUNraising Dinner Cruise
On Friday, 25 June 2010, The Centre's Tony Frew, Jacqui Hastings and Janine Cowen attended the Australian League of Immigration Volunteers' (ALIV) FUNraising Dinner Cruise on Sydney Harbour. The cruise included African drumming lessons, Henna tattoo artists, poker tournaments, inspiring volunteer stories and a highly contested trivia competition that had the whole harbour ringing with shouted answers from participants. This workshop is designed for those running and/or attending meetings. It focuses on communicating ideas and proposals in a succinct and persuasive manner. Major funding boost for Social Enterprise
Pro Bono Australia
The Gillard Government has announced two new initiatives to provide support for social enterprise through increased funding and sharing expertise between enterprises and professional firms. The Social Enterprise Development and Investment Fund will provide funding assistance for the start up and expansion of social enterprises, while the Professional Partnership Project will connect social enterprises that enable disadvantaged people find jobs and training with advice and expertise from key professional service firms. | New Incorporations Act and Regulations proclaimed

The new Associations Incorporation Act 2009 and Associations Incorporation Regulation 2010 commenced on 1 July 2010. The contributions made by members of the public, including individuals, associations, peak bodies and others, played a significant role in the development of the new laws. The reforms will help more than 35,000 associations across the State to operate more effectively and make it easier to manage their affairs. Read more |

New values in the Australian Public Service: A chance to put your views forward

As part of the Ahead of the Game, Blueprint for the Reform of Australian Government Administration released in March 2010, the Government has committed to revising and improving the APS Values. The Australian Public Service Commission (APSC) has been asked to consult widely to develop a smaller, tighter set of values that are meaningful, memorable and effective in driving change.
APSC now have a great opportunity to make real and systematic improvement to how it serves the Government and the community. To help the APSC do this, they are asking for your input as someone who uses Government services. Comments will be accepted until 2 August 2010. The Bankstown Decision and why it's important to not-for-profit sector employers

A recent landmark Federal Court ruling, now known as the Bankstown Decision, has significantly altered the Industrial Relations environment of Not-for-profit Employer across Australia. The Bankstown Decision means that Employers who previously believed they were NOT Constitutional Corporations (that is, Trading corporations) and were covered by their State IR jurisdiction may now find that their relationships with government (that is, service/funding agreements) will be deemed to be one of 'trade' and as such render them Constitutional Corporations.
