The Centre's October Networking Event for Volunteer Managers

Involving young people: Fundraising and keeping kids safe in your organisation
Tuesday, 20 October 2009, 2pm–4pm
Level 2, 228 Pitt St, Sydney

This networking event focuses on the rules and regulations around involving young people in fundraising activities for your organisation, including keeping appropriate records and safety issues and keeping children and young people safe when involving them in your organisation. Organisations will have an opportunity to discuss issues and brainstorm strategies. Book now as numbers are limited and booking is essential. Email Odessa O'Brien.

2009 NSW Volunteer of the Year Award2009 NSW Volunteer of the Year Award: Judging and ceremonies
The very difficult task of regional judging of the 2009 NSW Volunteer of the Year Award took place on Thursday, 8 October, with 16 judges gathering at The Centre for Volunteering to review the 300 nominations received. Regional Award Ceremonies will be held around the State between mid-October to late-November 2009. View the Award Timeline

The State judging panel will gather on Thursday, 15 October and State winners will be announced on Friday, 4 December 2009 at Parliament House, Sydney by Minister for Volunteering, the Hon Graham West.

The Centre's Volunteering Development Conference report
On 17–18 September 2009, over 120 volunteer coordinators and managers from the community sector converged on Novotel Darling Harbour Sydney for the Ignite Volunteering Development Conference, hosted by The Centre for Volunteering. Over the two days, delegates participated in plenary sessions, panels and workshops presented by over 35 speakers from academic, political and non-profit backgrounds. MORE

Post Ignite conference delegate networking
One of our conference sponsors, VolunteerTeam have kindly offered to assist, and have established an Ignite Post Conference Team site using the vTeam software. Over 70 delegates have already registered with the site. The Ignite Post Conference Team site now contains many of the documents and speech notes from the conference and will allow you to network with other like-minded people in similar roles in the community sector. Conference Review: Youth Volunteering – engaging young people for service

I recently attended the annual conference of The Centre for Volunteering with the goal of learning more about engaging young people for volunteering service. A reoccurring theme of the conference was that the landscape of volunteering is changing, and not-for-profit organisations, especially long established ones such as the Salvation Army and Benevolent Society, need to reassess their programs and program delivery or risk ever falling numbers of volunteers as the age of  their willing workers increases. Volunteering guides translated into 16 languages
Volunteering Australia has translated two of its foundation documents, The Definition and Principles of Volunteering, and the Volunteer Rights and Volunteer Checklist, into the 16 most used languages in Australia and can be downloaded for free. MORE

Participate in the 2009 National Survey of Volunteering Issues
Volunteering Australia invites all volunteers and not for profit organisations that involve volunteers, as well as business organisations that have employee volunteering programs, to participate in the 2009 National Survey of Volunteering Issues. The survey takes 15 minutes to complete. Closes 30 October. MORE

National Volunteer Week 2010 theme announced
The theme for National Volunteer Week 2010 brings volunteering to the forefront and provides a focussed agenda for the volunteer sector. It will raise the profile of volunteering and highlight that volunteering is important to Australian society and the contribution of all volunteers must be recognised. Productivity Commission's draft report – Contribution of the Not for Profit Sector
The Australian Government has welcomed the release of the Productivity Commission's draft report – Contribution of the Not for Profit Sector. The draft report identifies ways to improve third sector organisations' involvement in shaping government policy and programs, and provides recommendations for improving the regulatory framework for the sector. Homeless to do charity work to pay off fines
ProBono Australia
Homeless and disadvantaged people will be able to pay off fines by doing charity work or treatment programs under a scheme launched by the NSW Government. The NSW Government has begun a two-year trial to allow disadvantaged people such as the homeless, mentally ill and persons experiencing acute financial hardship to apply for a Work and Development Order from the SDRO. US volunteers cut back on time

American volunteers are cutting back their time in the wake of the economic downturn. A new report says they are suffering from a condition called "civic foreclosure" – an ailment that is limiting the range and depth of their civic engagement. MORE
