An evening dinner cruise on Sydney Harbour for $30
Thursday, 17 September, 2009, 6pm (for a 6.15pm departure)–9.45pm
Pyrmont Bay Wharf (next to Maritime Museum)

The Centre for Volunteering is hosting a dinner cruise on Sydney Harbour as part of its conference activities. There are limited places available and this is your opportunity to come along. Tickets cost $30 for members ($40 for non-members) and includes buffet dinner, DJ and dancing. Drinks can be purchased on board. Nominations for the 2009 NSW Volunteer of the Year Award close on Wednesday, 30 September.

Awards are awarded at a regional and State level and special awards are given to outstanding youth and senior volunteers. NOMINATE ONLINE TODAY

New Award Category – Volunteer Team of Year

In 2009 we launched a new category for the awards for Volunteer Teams. This award recognises the work of a number of volunteers who have worked on a particular project or program for a legitimate not-for-profit organisation. Teams eligible to be nominated for this award will include (but will not be restricted to) teams of employee volunteers. NOMINATE YOUR VOLUNTEER TEAM TODAY

Office hours update
The Centre for Volunteering will be closed to the public on Thursday, 17 September due to the Ignite conference at Novotel, and will be open from 10am–3pm on Friday, 18 September.

Fido: Skilled volunteering recruitment service
Fido is a skilled volunteering service for members of The Centre for Volunteering which assists them to find volunteers for a wide range of positions. The Fido Help Desk column in the Saturday and Monday editions of the Sydney Morning Herald is available for members to advertise volunteer vacancies. MORE

The Centre has partnered with University of Western Sydney to create an extra-curricular program which provides opportunities for university students in a range of studies to develop their qualities and skills via active volunteering within the wider community. The School partners with selected organisations to promote their volunteer training and training resources they have developed. Find out more about what is available and how to promote your volunteer training and training resources through the School. MORE

Partner with the School to deliver registered training courses
Has your organisation considered partnering with the School to deliver Registered Training Courses for your staff and volunteers, allowing them to achieve nationally recognised qualifications, such as the Certificate I in Active Volunteering, in-house using your own resources? MORE

Italian Interns at the SVM
The School is pleased to announce the arrival of two interns from Italy, Paolo, 26, and Francesca, 21, who are currently participating in the intern program of the Australian Catholic University (ACU) and the Universita Cattolica del Saro Cuore in Milan. They will work at the School until the end of September. MORE

Update on Major DET RPL Project
This important project for the volunteering sector has now reached the assessment stage. A group of 33 candidates for the Certificate I in Active Volunteering have been assessed with a 100 percent success rate. The Diploma of Business assessments are in progress with 19 candidates. MORE

Participate in the 2009 National Survey of Volunteering Issues
Volunteering Australia invites all volunteers and not for profit organisations that involve volunteers, as well as business organisations that have employee volunteering programs, to participate in the 2009 National Survey of Volunteering Issues. The survey takes 15 minutes to complete. Closes 30 October. MORE

Review of Volunteering Australia
FAHCSIA has commissioned a review to assess the services provided to Government by Volunteering Australia. People with an interest in volunteering and the role of Volunteering Australia are invited to forums in Sydney on Monday, 21 September, 10am–12noon and Tuesday, 22 September, 3–5pm. MORE

Give your views on building a National Compact
The Federal Government wants to hear your views on their online forum and invite you to engage in building a compact for Australia. They want to learn about you and your organisation, and what a national compact would mean to you and the people you work with. A consultation paper is now available to download. MORE

2009 Volunteer Grants close 25 September
Not-for-profit organisations, who are supported by volunteers, can apply for Australian Government grants of up to $5,000 to purchase equipment and cover the cost of petrol. Organisations will receive grants of between $1,000 and $5,000 to purchase equipment. MORE

So how does a leader attain detachment? (Forbes.com)
If attachment is a cardinal leadership sin, detachment is a virtue. Attachment to power and wealth can lead to the downfall of the greatest of leaders; a sense of detachment can bring everlasting glory. But a meaningful level of true detachment is very difficult to attain. MORE

Can getting involved make you happy?
Monash University and the Inspire Foundation launching into an exciting study exploring the relationship between civic engagement and well-being, demonstrating that participation has a positive impact on mental health and wellbeing. Inspire would love your help, by participating in a focus group. MORE
