Celebrating National Volunteer Week 2009 National Volunteer Week (NVW), 11–17 May 2009, is the largest celebration of volunteers and volunteerism in Australia, and provides an opportunity to highlight the role of volunteers in our communities and to say thank you to the more than 5 million Australians who volunteer. The Centre celebrates NVW 2009... The Westpac Foundation hosted The Centre's launch of National Volunteer Week and its 2009 NSW Volunteer of the Year Award, on Monday, 11 May 2009. The Centre's hosting volunteer thank you afternoon teas every day this week. The week is wrapping up the week with the Charity Week Volunteer Recognition Reception, hosted by FIA and The Centre for Volunteering, at Parliament House. Read more Volunteering unplugged launched Online job site SEEK has launched Volunteering Unplugged, a website that encourages volunteers to share their stories about volunteering and ultimately hope to inspire more people to devote some time to volunteering. Review of the National Standards Have you had experience with the National Standards for Involving Volunteers in Not for Profit Organisations? If yes, then Volunteering Australia would like to hear from you. The National Standards are undergoing a review and Volunteering Australia is inviting feedback through an online survey. Your feedback is vital to this very important review and we encourage you to take part. Have your say New online legal resource Law firm Makinson and d'Apice has established an online resource Centre for charities and not-for-profit organisations. May Networking Event: National Standards for Involving Volunteers in Not-For-Profit Organisations Tuesday, 19 May 2009, 2pm–4pm This networking session will introduce participants to the National Standards for Involving Volunteers in Not-For-Profit Organisations. The standards represent Volunteering Australia's benchmark for "best practice" in the management of volunteers. Participants will be able to make an informed decision regarding the implementation of the National Standards within their own organisations. The topics covered are:

Now in its third year, the Award recognises the 1.7 million volunteers in NSW who work tirelessly for the community. Youth Program Report: April 2009 Maia Giordano, Youth Volunteer Program Manager, conducted SCIP presentations for Year 11 students at Macarthur Girls High School where students were entertained with inspiring and informative presentations from a variety of not-for-profit organisations, including Red Cross and Invisible Children. Maia attended the quarterly Volunteer Centre Network Meeting which is made up of Volunteer Referral Centres from around New South Wales. This was an important opportunity to hear about the work being done in other areas around NSW. The Centre had a special youth volunteering the Networking Event – Time, Talents and Teamwork: How Invisible Children Inc. has created successful programs powered by youth volunteers. Spirit of Sydney hosts Lynne Dalton Members of the Spirit of Sydney volunteers group had the honour of hosting Australian Paralympian, Liesl Tesch and The Centre for Volunteering, CEO, Lynne Dalton, at a luncheon in Sydney recently.
Liesl, the Captain of the Australian Paralympic Wheelchair Basketball team, a veteran of five Paralympic Games, and winner of two silver and a bronze medals, spoke of the triumphs and struggles she has experienced to reach the peak of her sport. Her inspirational story, bubbly personality, and wonderful humour, made an excellent afternoon for all who attended. Lynne will be the guest speaker at the groups next lunch meeting in May. |
