February 2010 | Joy Woodhouse, Chair, The Centre for Volunteering
On the eve of our first meeting for 2010, it is timely for the Board of The Centre for Volunteering to update you on our last meeting in 2009 held on Wednesday, 25 November 2009. The Board is pleased to announce the election of the following office bearers:
Following the election of office bearers, the Board focused on strategic goals and discussed the presentation of project findings from a recent review of our IT and general operations, and the structure and priorities of The Centre. The Board also discussed office leasing prospects for The Centre in 2010–11.
Board Members received a report from guest speakers Communications Coordinator, Jacqui Hastings and Marketing, Fundraising and Partnerships Manager, Sam Naja. The presentations covered outcomes from the successful Ignite Volunteering Conference held in September 2009 and the development of a strategic fundraising program.
The Board would like to acknowledge the hard work of all staff involved in the 2009 NSW Volunteer of the Year Award program. The winners were announced at a ceremony held at Parliament House on Friday, 4 December 2009:
Adam Goodes, Sydney Swans Australian Rules player and dual Brownlow Medallist for best and fairest player, has accepted the invitation to be the NSW Volunteer Ambassador of the Year for 2010 in recognition of his work as a role model and mentor to Aboriginal youth.
The Board was saddened to learn of Mark Lyon's death on 4 November 2009. Mark was a long serving Board member of The Centre and supporter of volunteering and the third sector in Australia. Our thoughts go out to Mark's family and we remember his important contribution to the not for profit sector.
The Board determined that The Centre will develop scholarships for the School of Volunteer Management to recognise the contributions of both Mark Lyons and David Thomas to the volunteering sector. As advised in our last communique, David needed to resign from the Board late last year for health reasons after three decades of dedicated support and guidance.
