[9 May 2007 | Sydney Heritage Fleet]
In an announcement which will appeal to all who are interested in the preservation of heritage treasures, and especially those with a maritime bent, Sydney Heritage Fleet announces the screening of a new documentary covering the discovery, salvage, retrieval and restoration of the 19th Century square-rigger, James Craig, and her return to operational sailing; a feat acknowledged around the world.
The documentary, 5 years in the making, tells the intriguing story of the discovery, by members of the Sydney Heritage Fleet, of the rusting and abandoned hulk as she lay, half submerged, in the cold and isolated waters of Recherche Bay on the far south-east coast of Tasmania.
Brilliantly put together by a team comprising Executive Producer Robert O Albert AO RFD RD, who also was the executive producer of the 6-part series The Sea and Australia and the technically acclaimed Window on the World of Classical Ballet, and Producers Rob McAuley (The Liners, The Battleships and The Airships) and Steve Maccagnan, (Great Layouts – the story of Model Railways and Post Polio Syndrome – the Australian experience), and shot by award winning cinematographer Brian O'Reilly, this 90 minute film tells, in great detail, the story of the restoration of the 1874 built James Craig.
The film looks at the many challenges that faced the recovery and restoration teams and how they were solved. The documentary includes never before screened film, recorded from the very beginning of the project in 1972.
The music score for the production was specially written by Sven Libaek who conducted the 18-piece orchestra which recorded the music in the famous Studio 301. The narration is by John Bell AM, acclaimed actor and Artistic Director of the Bell Shakespeare Company.
