Issues and strategies in involving people with disabilities in the Arts sector

[28 May 2007 | The Centre for Volunteering]

Gwenda Lawther, Head of The Centre's School of Volunteer Management, recently attended a consultation meeting at which Accessible Arts NSW facilitated a discussion about the issues and strategies in involving people with disabilities in the Arts sector. This includes artists, audiences and volunteers.

Overall, people agreed that collaboration between organisations allows for information sharing, opportunities for joint projects and strength in funding opportunities.

There are many benefits for artists with disabilities utilising volunteer opportunities to further develop their interest and networks; and for the organisations who engage these volunteers who bring both skills and interest to their work.

Accessible Arts NSW conducts Disability Awareness and Access Training which is suitable for arts organisations in identifying barriers faced by people with disabilities in accessing venues, identifying strategies for breaking down physical and attitudinal barriers and complying with the Disability Discrimination Act.
