Minister for Volunteering's Monthly Report: October 2007
[13 November 2007 | NSW Minister for Volunteering]
Consulting with representatives of regional volunteer centres and local community organisations that rely on volunteers is a significant focus for the NSW Minister for Volunteering, Linda Burney. Ms Burney is also Minister for Fair Trading and Youth.
"The advice and input on key volunteering issues I receive from organisations around the State continues to be critical in informing the development of a strategic direction for volunteering in NSW," said Ms Burney.
"It's humbling and inspiring to meet the extraordinary people in every corner of the NSW who are dedicated to supporting their communities through volunteering."
During October Ms Burney:
- Met Central Coast Red Cross flood volunteers and one of their Home Support clients, 92-year old Kathleen Chappelow.
- Visited Central Coast Benevolent Society staff and a community garden at San Remo
- Delivered the keynote speech at the HACC Northside Forum.
- Met with members of the Tweed Volunteer Centre and members of local community organisations.
- Visited members of Clarence Valley Volunteering and a large group of local volunteer organisation representatives.
- Toured a major erosion control project with Landcare volunteers at Attunga before delivering the keynote speech at the prestigious NSW Landcare Awards in Tamworth.
- Met with the Armidale Volunteer Referral Service and local organisations.
- Delivered an update on the volunteering portfolio to the CEOs of all NSW Government agencies, initiating discussions on a whole-of-government focus on volunteering.
- Presented the keynote address at the Wolli Creek Preservation Society annual dinner. This fully volunteer-run organisation undertakes enormous bushcare work in the Wolli Creek area.
- Provided an update on the volunteering portfolio to regional and Sydney members of the Volunteer Centre Network Inc.

Blue suede shoes
Minister for Volunteering Linda Burney finds herself in some interesting situations during her meetings with volunteers around NSW (above photo).
The stylish Minister changed her blue suede shoes to size 10 gumboots to tour a major erosion control and wildlife corridor project at Attunga, near Tamworth.
Ms Burney is pictured with Tim Watts of the Namoi Catchment Management Authority CMA). The Namoi CMA provided a $120,000 grant to the Bubogullion 100 Landcare group to undertake the project, which extends through 6 large landholdings.
