Call for organisations to participate in the Student Community Involvement Program (SCIP)

[1 May 2006 | The Centre for Volunteering]

We are looking for organisations that believe in the importance of young people getting involved in their community. Does your volunteer organisation already have a student volunteer program? Are you an organisation that would like to involve student volunteers but is not sure how to do this?

We are presently carrying out a project at The Centre for Volunteering that will facilitate the involvement of students in volunteering activities. We are developing tools and resources to aid in the successful implementation of sustainable student volunteer programs. We are also organising a forum to be held in the coming months that will address the issue of opening up volunteer opportunities for young people. Schools and volunteer organisations will be invited to discuss their experiences and ask questions relating to student community involvement.

SCIP is a school-based program that promotes the participation of students in their community through initiatives in volunteer or community service. It aims to encourage proactive youth with greater tolerance, understanding and community awareness.

At the request of a school, we organise speakers from a wide variety of not-for-profit organisations to visit and address the students. It is an opportunity for organisations to promote the work they do in the community and recruit more volunteers. The SCIP students are mostly aged 16–17 and are insured through their own schools.

In the short term, community student involvement provides valuable help for volunteer organisations and the community, while contributing to the education and development of students. In the long term, it can develop a more responsive, responsible and better integrated society.

If you are an organisation that involves student volunteers or if you would like to learn more about SCIP, please phone Jacinthe Brosseau on 02 9261 3600 or email jbrosseau@volunteering.com.au
