Nominating an unsung hero – Pride of Australia Medal 2006

[6 June 2006 | The Daily Telegraph and The Sunday Telegraph]

Pride of Australia Medal 2006Following the outstanding success of the inaugural Pride of Australia Medal in 2005, The Daily Telegraph and The Sunday Telegraph have launched the program again in 2006.

The Pride of Australia Medal aims to bring to public attention the extraordinary contributions of everyday Australians who don't always get the acknowledgment they deserve. A unique sterling silver Pride of Australia Medal is awarded to the winners to recognise and honour them at a special ceremony.

Ten medals will be awarded in NSW and the ACT to celebrate and honour values and attributes such as bravery, courage, leadership, community spirit, mateship, fair play, tolerance, hard work and generosity.

We all know a quiet hero, someone who never seeks recognition but who works tirelessly and unselfishly for the benefit of others and are deserving of more credit for their contribution to the Australian way of life.

We want to know about those people whose kind heart and everyday heroism has made an impact on our lives.

This is their turn in the spotlight.

A Pride of Australia Medal will be awarded in each of the following categories:

  1. Bravery – For an act of bravery that helped save a life.
  2. Courage – For the determination and strength of character to triumph over personal adversity.
  3. Young Aussie – For an Australian 17 years or younger who has demonstrated outstanding resolve, mature judgement and moral character beyond their years.
  4. Community Spirit – For an Australian or group of Australians whose selfless, tireless and largely unacknowledged actions have enriched or improved the quality of life for a local community.
  5. Role Model – For common sense, compassion and wisdom while teaching, coaching and mentoring others to be the best they can be.
  6. Mateship – For an Australian or group of Australians who have demonstrated loyalty and goodwill to others; pulling together to achieve a common good, especially when times are tough.
  7. Environment – For an Australian or group of Australians whose actions have nurtured and improved the environment.
  8. Fair Go – For an Australian citizen born overseas who has enriched Australia through their honesty, hard work and willingness to embrace their new home.
  9. Peace – For advancing understanding, tolerance and social harmony among Australians of any background.
  10. True Blue – For a lifetime of achievement in fostering Australian values and making Australia a better place to live.
