National Volunteer Week: You can change your world!
15-21 May 2006
[1 May 2006 | The Centre for Volunteering]
Are you at a loss for what to do this National Volunteer Week? Below are some creative and inexpensive ways to promote the value of volunteering to your community and to recruit new volunteers:
- Contact your local newspaper and ask if they are interested in writing about your volunteers.
- Contact your local community radio station and offer to speak about your organisation, the benefits of volunteering, how you use volunteers and how people can volunteer. Tell potential volunteers to visit www.volunteer.com.au to search for suitable volunteer roles.
- Partner with your local council or other local not-for-profit to arrange
a celebration, information or training event.
- Spend one whole day raising funds. Get out into the community, promote volunteering and raise money to sponsor your organisation.
- Arrange to talk to local community groups including church, fitness and retiree groups about volunteering.
- Organise group jobs for corporate and group volunteers during National Volunteer Week. Corporate and group volunteer roles can be advertised through our volunteer referral service.
- Contact TV shows. Encourage your local community stations to have a volunteer focus during the week.
- Negotiate with a local supermarket to display a volunteer hours thermometer where all local organisations can add their volunteer hours. Recruitment posters can be added as part of the display.
- Run a volunteer recruitment campaign. Assess your volunteer needs, draft the relevant job descriptions and advertise volunteer vacancies through our referral service. We interview all applicants and identify suitable volunteers who are then referred to your organisation.
National Volunteer Week activities
Advertise your NSW-based event or promotion on The Centre for Volunteering's website. Just email us the details of your National Volunteer Week event and include location, date and start/end time, what's happening, the contact person's name and title, email address and phone number, and any photos or graphics.
Find out what non-for-profit organisations in NSW are doing. Don't forget you can also send events (not just NVW events) to Volunteering Australia's new web events calendar.
Volunteering Australia's new National Volunteer Week web hub will go live this week and will include free resources and downloadable posters.
