November Networking Event – Running Volunteer Programs for culturally and linguistically Diverse (CALD) backgrounds – Marist180
Thursday, 30 November 2017
10:00am – 12:00pm
Organisations within the not for profit sector have been required to take on a variety of programs with a growing need to manage the changing and increasing diversity in our communities and workplaces. There is an increasing need to understand the experiences and challenges that can present when working with volunteers from varying cultural backgrounds.
Our presenter is from Marist180, a not-for-profit organisation committed to empowering people with skills, knowledge, practical support and encouragement. They strive to care for all who need support and hope, from people without a home to those seeking asylum and advocate and work towards education, employment, and social inclusion, empowering people to take steps to achieve positive change. The speaker will share their CALD program knowledge, experiences and challenges and determining best practice for your organisation and engaging the volunteer base.
Ms Angela Bekesi, National Volunteer Coordinator from Marist180
Angela is the National Volunteer Coordinator for Marist180 – a charity working with at risk youth and people seeking asylum in the greater western Sydney, Canberra, Brunswick and Brisbane regions. For the past year Angela has been focused on the development of the volunteer program to cater for the varying needs of a culturally diverse volunteer and client base.
For the past 8 years she has been working with volunteers previously with Multiple Sclerosis as Volunteer Manager – Events ACT/NSW/VIC and also as a volunteer with organisations such as Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras. Working and volunteering with such large groups of volunteers and her previous experience working in the building industry have helped her learn the different ways of engagement and communication required for diverse groups of people.
